My Obsession with Hamletmachine:
(Act I, Sc. I)
Amy Lewis concretizes an obsession with Heiner Müller’s play Hamletmachine, a work Müller calls “the description of a petrified hope, an effort to articulate a despair so it can be left behind.” (Müller, Heiner. Hamletmachine and Other Texts for the Stage. 50) Through the acknowledgement of the many historical, political, and literary references and figures embedded in Müller’s play, Lewis attempts to reevaluate history, commenting on both autobiographical and biographical stories from an abstract, silent media—that of dance.
In addition, Lewis and Sonsherée Giles of AXIS Dance Company will show two solo works set to two movements from the Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello by Bach, the beginning of a massive endeavor that will eventually present choreography to the six suites in total.
